Our School
Newcomb K-8 Academy is located on the eastern edge of Long Beach and Los Angeles County, a suburban area within Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD). Newcomb has been providing service to the community for over 60 years and currently serves a multi-ethnic student population from all parts of Long Beach, named by USA Today as one of the most diverse cities in the country. Our population includes students from disparate cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds who all share academic success within Newcomb’s learning environment. Newcomb has been recognized by the U.S. Dept. of Education as one of the Best Schools in the Country when it was awarded the National Blue Ribbon for Schools in 2022. Newcomb is also a California Distinguished School.
Newcomb Opened in 1962 to serve the newly built neighborhood of El Dorado Park Estates and other areas of east long Beach. In the early 1990s Newcomb was renamed Newcomb K-8 Academy of Excellence. In 2015, Newcomb reopened after two years of construction as part of the Long Beach Unified School District’s Measure K bond program.
An underpinning of Newcomb’s success is its strong relationship to the community. Many current students are second or third generation Newcomb Spartans, a tribute to the positive experiences of prior generations. The teaching staff is experienced, highly qualified, and stable. Based on the 20+-year average tenure for teachers at the site, educators view Newcomb as a great place to teach. The teaching staff is close-knit and works to support one another to ensure that all students are successful. Newcomb is also supported by three very strong parent organizations- PTSA, The Newcomb Foundation and The Newcomb Sankofa Village.
